Gazetteer of Strathardle

A. G. Reid has written a wonderful booklet: A. G. Reid "Strathardle - Its History and its People", 2nd Edition, Blairgowrie Printers 1986, 1992.

Here is a list of places mentioned therein for visitors and those unfamiliar with the area.

Given the large number of unfamiliar and hard-to-find place names, it is helpful to use the Ordinance Survey Grid Reference system. A Grid Reference consists of two letters to indicate how many hundred kilometers the general area is east and north of the national reference point, followed by digits to indicate more precisely where the point is within that 100-km-square area. So "NO 04 63" means 4 km east and 63 km north of the "NO" point, which is 300 km east and 700 km north of the origin. More digits can be added for more precision, e.g. NO 080 598 to indicate a point 8.0 km east and 59.8 km north of the NO point. The prefix "NN" labels the square 100 km west of "NO", and NJ is north of NO.

To find the places identified below, here are the boundaries of the maps in his book.

The map on pp 3-4 has 1 km squares. The lower left grid reference to the bottom left of Delvine and the Roman Legionary Fortress is NO 12 40. The upper right corner is NO 19 50

The map on p 45 shows Kirkmichael in the lower right, which includes the grid reference point NO 08 60. The map on p 28 is centered on Kirkmichael and Milton which are about one mile apart. The largest map is on p 44, including all but the southern parts of Strathardle and Glenshee, an area about 14 km across with lower left corner NO 03 55, and upper right corner NO 17 68.
