Both of these books are to be the potential subject of future Journal Clubs led by Neal: 1) Politics of Meaning, by Michael Lerner - discusses shifting goals of society from being the best outcome for yourself to being the best outcome for society as a whole. 2)Technological Risk, by H.W. Lewis - uses cost/benefit analysis to look at safety issues and our responses to them - are we making rational use of limited resources to obtain the most protection from the most likely dangers? -Friday programs were discussed and Nancy Martin is going to bring in the guidelines regarding these programs for distrubtion among the group. A roster with contact information for members of the Tech-Biz committee will also be supplied soon by Nancy. -Duncan mentioned the "Convocations," much confusion ensued as to what, exactly, they were and the City Club's role was in them. Duncan will be getting more information for the group regarding the Convocations. This was also mentioned as a potential way for the Tech-Biz committee to engage in some top-down planning and try to find unifying themes for our own activities that might also tie in with activities being pursued by the other committees. This led to disussion of a "meta-organization" group to discuss the options, advisiabilty and manner of implementing this type of structure for at least some of the activities of the Tech-Biz committee. -A Journal Club was proposed by Dave to discuss the "capability/maturity" model -A Journal Club was proposed by Stephen to utilize the knowledge of John Knowlton (of Oregon Business Media and Business at Home) regarding technology with small business and individuals -A potential subject for further discussion was raised (with some unnecessary potshots at the noble practice of law) regarding whether software patents and other forms of intellectual property protection stifle intellectual freedom and growth. -Also discussed was finding service goals for our committee to allow us to help other parts of the City Club utilize technology (with or without their consent). This led to Neal being nominated to do a 1 minute proposal regarding an "outreach" to other parts of the City Club. Neal, Floyd, Caleb and Jim were discussed as volunteers/draftees for this outreach. -Tim is working on completing a guide to help new members try to figure out what is going on during our meetings. While this is apparently a monumental task, definitions of terminology and procedures are coming along. -Among the important issues decided (with Tim making decisions at what was no doubt a dangerous and breakneck speed for any committee) was that there will be a BREW-PUB discussion on Tuesday, August 16, 1996 at the Bridgeport (1313 N.W. Marshall) at 7:00 p.m. A subject for discussion may or may not have been decided on by then. 9:00 chaos overtook the meeting Next meeting is August 8, 1996 Woodard & Gerstenfeld, PC "Some circumstantial evidence is Attorneys at Law very strong, as when you find P.O.
