This is simply a holdover from earlier times of “dumb terminals” with 80 column screens. The limit only serves to discourage the use of descriptive variable names, as longer names consume more columns. A better limit would be 120 columns or 132 columns.
Proposed change: Remove the number "80" and replace it with either "120" or "132". | | |
