sorry if several copies of this arrived, i was having trouble
with one of the addresses.....

Neil McDermott's message this morning was a change from the
usual routine, including names of several people i occasionally
think about, some i haven't thought about in years, (some i
can't remember at all), and since i'm in touch with no one from
our class at summit high school (but occasionally some folks
from the year behind us, notably brian keith). I'm guessing,
but i assume like many of you, i was intrigued, wondering about
other than having email addresses (some at sites i could vaguely
identify) what are these people doing with their lives anyway?

So at the risk of eliminating the main source of conversation at
a reunion, i'd be interested in hearing from any of you about
what you're up to, any good gossip you've heard, etc.

To start (briefly) i'm married (since 1987) to a clinical social
worker (and hell of a person) who grew up in (gasp!) long island. we live in arlington, ma (which is
next to cambridge). I have twin five year old daughters who are
really a trip. Having daughters, I confess, makes me wonder
about raising girls, which sends me back to thinking about high
school and some of you on neil's list (hi toby hi tina) on
occasion i think about kathy reeves and wonder how she not only
put up with all the shit that people (boys and girls ) laid on
her and still managed to be a damn good athlete and an
outstanding student, particularly in fields where women have not
always excelled. someday i'll find her and get her advice on
raising girls though i imagine i'm pretty different than her
parents (who i don't remember)
wonder

as for work, i'm currently asst. director of the center for
state and local govt. at harvard's kennedy school of govt. some
administrative work and some research, primarily into
intersection of politics, infrastructure, and land use.
i'm currently writing a political history of boston's 8 billion
dollar highway/tunnel project.

prior to coming here via the
kennedy school's master's program i was a
local journalist for about seven years. so i suppose all those
temper tantrums i threw in front of the summit nj school
committee were good training.

as for gossip, i don't have much, of all the people i knew in
summit, the only one i stay in touch with is brian keith who was
in the class behind ours. he lived near us for several years
while doing a post doc and he and i occasionally chat via
email. he and his wife are both junior faculty at the
university of chicago. i was, for a while, also in touch with
jake levine (who was neil and my heart's partner for many years)
he is also in chicago where he dropped out of college
became a computer wonk for a firm that was quite successful
selling maps and geographic info to folks in the health care
field. for a long time i also was in touch with lynda (younger sister of karen) winslow who was in
the bay area doing stuff i didn't understand with computers and
phtotography. but i've lost touch with both of them.

more in passing, a few years ago i was sitting in my office when, of all
people, maggie whelan (remember her?) appears. she was here as
a student and recognized my name. she's some sort of high
powered republican politico. we actually had a couple of nice
lunches together.

and several years while working on a project about
growth management in new jersey (now there's an oxymoron) run
into rebecca sindon's mother at a conference. (if i recall,
toby, she said you were a journalist type)

and many years before that i crossed paths with erin geddis who
was doing pr work for one of the big boston hospitals (she was
as nice a person as she always was).

there wasn't that more than you should know?

i'd be curious to hear more about what any of you are up to and
what you know about other folks with whom we shared our troubled
adolescence

Hello Everyone,
What fun it was to receive your message and to have my memory jogged a bit.
Was it really twenty years ago that we were in high school?!?!? I'm sure we
don't look any older.

I must say I was very excited about a reunion, and very disappointed to find
out that it was scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, I had just
arranged to have my entire family fly out to California for a Thanksgiving
feast. Therefore, I am thrilled to connect with all those who live on or
near the Information Super Highway.

For those who are interested, this is what I have been up to the last few
years:

I completed my Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Stanford Medical School ten years
ago. Since then I have changed careers about 20 times, and I don't intend to
stop changing soon.

I worked as a management consultant for Booz, Allen, and Hamilton. I wrote
two books on the science of cooking which are published by Scientific
American/Freeman Press (The Epicurean Laboratory (for adults) and Incredible
Edible Science (for Kids)). I am happy to say that they have both won some
awards. I ran a software company which developed a multimedia system for
bookstore customers, called BookBrowser. I sold the business a year ago and I
am hoping that the new owners will take it on-line soon. I worked for Compaq
Computer, in California, as a multimedia producer for kid's educational
titles. And now I am back to writing more books. I have two that are
currently in progress. If anyone is interested, I tell you what they are
about....

On a more personal note, I am married (almost ten years) and have a six year
old son named Josh. He has more energy than anyone else I know. I bet you
wonder where he got it....

We live in Portola Valley, California, which is about 2 miles from Stanford
University and 20 miles from San Francisco. (I came out to California on
vacation 15 years ago and never left.)

The only people I keep up with are Tobie (Hi Tobie!!) and Claire Thorson.
Claire lives in Santa Cruz, California and is an artist. She has traveled all
over the world, and recently lived with her husband at the Tasajara Zen
Center in the Carmel Valley for five years.

I also kept in close touch with David Garfinkel, who was one class ahead of
us. He unfortunately died about ten years ago of AIDS. I still miss him alot.

I would love to get more news about others in our class. Does anyone else
live out here in California? Perhaps, we can have a reunion west.

Let's keep in touch...
Tina

OK, OK - I've seen enough interest to set up two things:

1) A mailing list - send mail to
	summit-l@teleport.com
and it will be forwarded to others on the list.

I've already signed up David Luberoff (even though he made no fewer than
four spelling errors in my name - no interviews for you, Mr.
journalist!), Tina Seelig and Dan Garlen. I'll sign up anyone else on
request.

2) A World Wide Web page to store an archive of the conversation, etc.
for
	late comers.

you i keep in touch with vicariously through your mom and my
mom. amazingly of all the phone numbers i've known all these
years, i still remember yours. what was even more fun was when
i came down for the surprise 70th bash for my mom we (my sister
and i) needed to drop some stuff off at your parents house which
i was able to find without a mistake. i also showed my sister
the sewer in front of the house we used to climb down. you
know, old friend, we did some dangerous and particularly stupid
stuff as kids (lighting gasoline on fire in your garage ... and
that mouse ... oh that mouse ... i still feel guilty about that
mouse. anyway, if you didn't read it (a bunch of them came back
because i didn't address them right) i sent a long note to
several people that neal m. contacted catching up with life ...
he's posted it, bad spelling and all, on the new shs home page.

You probably just saw a bunch of mail like
Subject: cc:Mail UUCPLINK 2.0 Undeliverable Message

If you ever have a choice of email systems, stay away from cc:Mail.
It doesn't follow the Internet email standards, which caused it to get
into a fight with our list server, and they were sending messages back
and forth to each other, with us as spectators....

We may get a few more messages like that, but they should stop soon.

To avoid this problem in the future, I changed the configuration so that
when you reply to a message it will go to the author by default, rather
than the list itself via a Reply-To: summit-l@teleport.com header.
But now we won't be able to monitor Lubbie's private mail.... :-)

Don't worry if this makes no sense - and keep up the conversation!

Cheers,

-Neal

Greetings to all and many thanks to Neil McBurnett (and his alter-ego Neil
McDermitt) for setting us up on the net.

David, I think you wrote in some year book of mine -- must have been Jr. High
School -- that I would probably end up living in the suburbs, married, with 2
children, and a station wagon. This was comic in that at the time it
apparently seemed perposterous.

As it happens, I live in the suburbs (Westfield, NJ); I am married (three
years this time, eight years cumulatively Mr. Loewer of the E-mail ID having
moved into the ex-husband column some time ago.); I had my second child in
May; and, yes, I recently acquired a station wagon (having drawn the line at
mini-van thereby narrowly avoiding a wholesale slide to bourgeois).

My husband works for the Census Bureau. (Anyone who has read The Alienist
take note.) My eldest child is eight (third grade). He is almost as tall as
I am (not much of an accomplishment) and is just emerging from the
snaggle-tooth kid stage. He has recently developed an obsession with penguins
to the bewilderment of all. While other children are agitating to go to
DisneyWorld, my kid wants to go to Antarctica. I haven't had much luck
getting him to settle for a trip to the zoo.

My baby is a girl and very cute -- in the unbiased opinion of her mother. I
too face the prospect of raising a girl with worry. Mine runs more to the
"pretty princess" toys advertised on TV and the passive roles of female
characters in kid movies -- still. I wonder how you counteract all the
negative subliminal messages on femininity that are baked into our culture.
Well, we all survived worse, didn't we?

I work at AT&T in the finance department. For the record, I'm in the part
that remains AT&T post-Big Bang. Several months ago my dear son announced to
a waitress, "My mother counts beans for the 'phone company. Do you have any
beans you need counted?" Charming child. Again for the record, I am not an
accountant. My duties have more to do with financial planning which is sort
of like being an accountant -- without the glamour.

My sister, for those that may remember her, lives in Philadelphia, and until
recently was defending the poor and downtrodden as an attorney with the Legal
Aid Society. Now that some of Maggie Whelan's friends have cut the money for
that sort of thing, she is clerking for a federal appeals judge.

I am enjoying reading the notes coming in although I will have to get more
adept at web crawling (at least some of my folks are helping me with the
lingo) to make it to Dan's page. Look forward to seeing those folks that
will be at the reunion.

Becky

Hello to all -- it has been super to see these email messsages from
all of you coming up on my screen lately in contrast to the usual
flood of boring things I get.

I lived in California working and in grad school until 1986, and have
been a professor of electrical engineering at Princeton since then.
My parents moved to NC in 1977, so my ties to Summit have been pretty weak,
although I do go to Bell Labs in New Providence (Murray Hill) every now
and then. I have been married 9 years with 2 little kids (not wise guys
like Becky's yet, but it's coming...), and already had plans to go with
my family to see my parents for Thanksgiving weekend when word of
the reunion reached me last week. Our flight back gets in Sunday
morning, so Saturday night looks unlikely for me, although I would
very much like to get together with the email crowd (a lot of whom
I knew pretty well) and others for brunch on Sunday morning if
at all possible.

Please let me know who is up for brunch somewhere on Sunday AM??

I'm also happy to see that Becky's dry sense of humor hasn't changed
too much in 20 years!!

It's fun to read what other folks have been up to. I've been out of
touch with nearly everyone in the class for 20 years. My folks moved
to NC a year after I went to college (they're now in Sun City West,
AZ), so my only ties to NJ have been occasional business trips and,
more recently, visits to my brother in Belle Meade.

You could have predicted in '75 that I would stay involved with
computers. I've worked for AT&T Bell Labs ever since I graduated from
Brown and Berkeley. I really enjoy it and get to do a lot of stuff
with the Internet. If you have access to the World Wide Web, you
should visit my home page:

	http://bcn.boulder.co.us/~neal/Home.html

I have pointers to lot of interesting things there. You can see a
picture of me - be forwarned that I have a beard now :-|@

When I think back to Summit I sense that I knew very little about
the community and was involved in even less of it. David Luberoff
wrote something along those lines in my yearbook -- it was
interesting to come across that note recently. In Boulder Colorado
I've been involved in lots of things - the library board, an online
community network, sustainable development.... Its great fun. Must
be that Berkeley California influence, though I'm still more fond of
learning and planning than I am of doing.

I got married in '88 to Holly Lewis. After we decided not to have
kids she decided to go to Med school (having started off in theatre
and counseling and the Peace Corps/Nepal). She just finished that and
started a residency program at a hospital in Portland Oregon, so we
will be here for three years. They're letting me continue to work at
the same job via a 'teleworking' arrangement, so I telecommute via the
Internet from a building downtown. We're in a great location from
which Holly can walk or bike to work and I can take the bus. In '98
we'll move back to Boulder.

I'm not playing any bridge these days, but I continue to sing (folk
music get-togethers), and I enjoy international folk dancing a lot.

I'll bite - what are they? I liked the sound of the previous ones. But

Neal, Neal, Neal!!!!

I can't believe you called me Tobie! I wonder if that will ever stop. I
know that Tobie and I have alot in common, but this is getting rediculous.
My mother even told me recently that she saw Tobie on "Good Morning America"
and that she looked just like me when I was on the same program last year!
Apparently we had the same hair style, the same dress, the same make-up
artist, etc.... Perhaps we really were separated at birth.

Anyway, my new books are quite dissimilar from one another. The first one is
called "Lab Coats and Root Beer Floats." It is for kids, and is about the
scientific method. It encourages kids to follow their own interests and leads
them through the process of scientific exploration.

The second book is quite a leap from my others. It is called "The Mind
Metaphor". The goal of the book is to show that corporations are organized
and run just like the brain. I am having a great time working on this one.
Each day the analogy seems to get richer and highlight some new feature of
business in an interesting way. This book draws on my scientific and
business background, and is quite a challenge.

By the way, Tobie recently wrote a book too. That is why she was on Good
Morning America. It is about the car insurance industry, if I remember
correctly. She also works for Consumer Reports. Hi Tobie!!

I still haven't made a final decision to go to the reunion or not. If I
decide to hop on a plane on Saturday, is anyone available to pick me up at

sorry if several copies of this arrived, i was having trouble
with one of the addresses.....

Cheers,

-Neal

Does anyone know any other mail addresses for classmates?

Dave, you mentioned Maggie Whelan - do you have any idea where she is

you know where these children are?" Can you check with the alumnus
office there?

Who is planning to go to the reunion this Thanksgiving? I'll be there,
with my wife Holly.

If I
decide to hop on a plane on Saturday, is anyone available to pick me up at
the airport??

Sounds good - I'll be at the brunch!

Larry Lauer (who I think is at brobb31@aol.com - testing....) encourages
everyone to sign up and send in their money as soon as possible - they've
got a lot of people who have verbally said they were coming, but haven't
sent in their forms, and they want to avoid paying for noshow's. So
please send in your responses ASAP if possible, and if you don't think
your money will arrive on time at least confirm with them what your real
plans are! Of course, I don't have the materials they sent out in my
hands right now and I'm away from Portland for another day or two, so I
can't quote the address, etc. - can someone else post that to:
	summit-l@teleport.com

And, as always, I encourage you to send in notes to that same address for
our Virtual Reunion, whether or not you can make it in person.

Cheers,

Howdy, classmates

I wrote a long essay that somehow evaporated into the ether after I sent it to
the wrong e-mail address. I hope this one survives.

I guess it's reassuring that some things never change: i.e., Neal McBurnett
still confused me with Tina Seelig in an earlier e-mail. He wondered what my
new book was about. Well, you're not exactly wrong, Neal, because I did write
a book on auto insurance for Consumer Reports a couple years ago. Not quite as
exciting as Tina's concepts, but it paid for a new roof!

In fact, auto insurance continues to be my "specialty" at Consumer Reports,
where I've been a writer for the past 5 years. Happily, it's not the only
subject I work on. I've also written about airlines, department stores, taxes,
the dairy industry, low-fat foods, shampoos, electronic pianos, and any number
of other products and services. I had the most fun with department stores: Got
to fly around the country to go shopping. Consumer Reports is a great place to
work: lots of interesting, friendly, basically liberal people. By the way, if
any of you need shopping advice, feel free to contact me. For every product, I
know the maven.

Currently, however, I'm not working. I'm on a year's leave of absence to spend
time with my 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Julia. I'm not at all bored as I feared,
however, because I have my work cut out for me: Julia is profoundly deaf and
my husband Jim Reisler and I are trying to teach her to speak.

If you think this sounds difficult, you're right. The approach we're using
-called the "oral" approach" - involves intensive speech therapy, auditory
training (teaching Julia how to listen for sounds), and lip-reading lessons.
Julia will probably need to be tutored for years. And the likelihood is that,
while she'll eventually catch up to her peers, her language development will
be slow.

So why not just teach her American Sign Language first? Because,
paradoxically, it's so easy. Kids who learn signing before speech, or
simultaneously with speech invariably end up using mainly sign. And from the
literature I've read, kids who mainly sign do poorly academically. One study
showed signing high-school seniors have an average reading level of fourth
grade. On the other hand, we've met a number of oral deaf kids who are doing
very well in a mainstreamed school, and communicating well with their hearing
friends. That's an option we'd like to leave open for Julia.

Fortunately, Julia recently received a cochlear implant, a sort of artificial
ear that is aiding her hearing tremendously. In short, a small computer called
a speech processor translates speech and environmental sound into electric
(electronic?) impulses that are picked up by the auditory nerve and perceived
by the brain as sound. The whole contraption is fairly small, involving a
small earpiece and a little box worn on a harness on the child's body. You
really can't even see the earpiece when Julia's blonde hair covers it.

Many Deaf people are against this device, because they feel it's wrong to
tamper with the body of a person who could communicate perfectly well without
such radical measures. A few even feel it's akin to genocide, because it's
denying profoundly deaf children access to the wide world of Deaf culture (a
capital "D" denotes a person who mainly signs and considers himself part of a
defined cultural minority). To that, I say bullshit! If, later in life, Julia
wants to learn to sign and to join Deaf culture, we would support that
decision. But at least we can say we made it possible for her to have options.
If she learns to sign first, the speech option is basically closed to her
after a few years of age.

Most gratifying about our decision is that the implant is beginning to work!
It has been activated about six weeks, and already Julia is hearing things she
never heard before, particularly in high-frequency ranges: the telephone, a
tea kettle, a power lawn mower, the microwave oven. What's more, we're
starting to hear new sounds from her, indicating that she's beginning to
process the speech sounds she hears. In a couple months, we expect she'll be
producing new words and on her way to an "oral" life in the mainstream. We are
witnessing a miracle.

>From this dissertation one might conclude that I think about nothing from deaf
education and implants. In fact, I've been busy with lots of stuff during my
leave. Writing a screenplay with a neighbor, for one (who isn't?). And I've
thought a lot about high school. Such a seminal time. Unfortunately, the
negative stuff seems to rise to the surface first.

So here's a question to ponder: If you were like Peggy Sue and had the chance
to go back and do it again, would you?

My answer: Yes, if it meant having more fun and worrying less about what
everyone thought of me. No, if it meant attending another mandatory pep rally.

I await your answers, fellow classmates. Ciao.

Sender: owner-summit-l@teleport.com
Precedence: bulk

I've got a copy from Pete Laughlin of this directory so that I could
generate a map by zip code of where the class is now. That is now up
on our web site - it is interesting! Here is a first electronic copy
of the whole directory, FYI.

We just got back to Portland from our trip back east.
Everyone I talked to thought that the reunion went very well! It was held
in a big mansion with lots of food and tables scattered in various rooms,
some of
which were loud and rowdy and some of which were quiet and more intimate.
The food was good, the name tags were very helpful (yearbook pictures), and
the alums didn't seem to hold on to very many high school cliques and
stereotypes. The long distance prizes went to Sue Brigham Hudson from
Anchorage AK and Mari Fiskum Vagen from Norway (her first trip back!).
Cheers to the organizers for getting so many people together under such
nice circumstances! (More fun than the 10th reunion, from what I hear).

On Friday evening there was a more typical loud bar scene at Uncle Mikes,
but if you went upstairs you could have more quiet conversations. Dan
Garlen, Scott Johnson and I briefly dropped in on the Sunday brunch
(looking unsuccessfully for Jim Sturm), and saw a large table of people
there. I was the 'lucky winner' of a set of four lift tickets to Great
Gorge, which I blithly fobbed off on the first friend I saw rather than
discovering whether my wonderful hosts were interested (Dan & Marilyn
Garlen and their delightful kids Alex and Mandy.)

The organizers distributed a class directory with questionnaire (which
I hope to get up on the web page), and Dan Garlen and I distributed
the map of 'where they are now' and a list of names sorted by zip code
for easy location of people near you.

There was at least one large group picture of Franklin elementary
school graduates, which I hope to get up on the web. Larry Lauer
owned one of the cameras, and I think Scott Johnson also got a shot
of it.

Larry - will we will be able to get a list of attendees? How many
were there (classmates and guests)?
How much did you all end up subsidizing it? Need any donations?

It was nice to see the folks that were able to fit it into their
plans on short notice! There is talk of a 25th reunion, but I'm
more tempted to wait for the 30th for the next big one. In the
meantime we can keep in touch on-line and at smaller gatherings
now that we have a much more complete directory! I also heard from
several other folks with email addresses, so maybe more people will sign
up for this list.

What did other people think?

All,

Comments on Neal McB's comments:

>Everyone I talked to thought that the reunion went very well!
I give it a 3.5

>the name tags were very helpful
VERY VERY helpful - time was less than kind on SOME of our classmates.

>the alums didn't seem to hold on to very many high school cliques and
>stereotypes.
I found this VERY interesting & intertaining. "Girls" who would have
NOTHING to do with me in High School greeted me with hugs and kisses -
guys who were more likely to beat me up then talk to me were down right
chatty.

>Cheers to the organizers for getting so many people together
GOOD job!!

>More fun than the 10th reunion
TRUE! The open bar and lack of dinner was a BAD combo!

>I was the 'lucky winner' of a set of four lift tickets to Great
>Gorge, which I blithly fobbed off on the first friend I saw rather
>than discovering whether my wonderful hosts were interested (Dan &
>Marilyn Garlen and their delightful kids Alex and Mandy.)
We forgive your thoughtlessness - BUDDY.

>There is talk of a 25th reunion, but I'm more tempted to wait for the
>30th for the next big one.
I agree. My vote is to wait for the 30th.

All and all it was a good time and great to see everyone there. We
missed thoses who couldn't make it - so keep in "E-touch"

         Warmest Regards,

Dear All, after requesting everyone go to brunch on Sunday I failed
myself to show up -- our plane getting back from NC on Sunday AM
was delayed 6-1/2 hours for mechanical problems. (The pilot said
an "unrecoverable failure" might result if it were not fixed, which
sounded like a quite a euphemism to me). In any case I didn't get
home to nearly 3:00, which was still an hour from Summit.

I hope to catch up with you all in real space (as opposed to cyberspace)
sometime soon, without having to wait until the 25th or 30th or whatever...

Sincerley, Jim STurm

Hi All,
I'm really sorry that I wasn't able to make it to the reunion. My house (in
California) was full of people for Thanksgiving, and it was impossible for me
to exit easily. (I didn't make the final decision until 2:00am the night
before. I kept calling Tobie to say,"Please pick me up," followed by "No, I
won't be coming.")

Anyway, I am happy to hear any good stories via e-mail. In addition, if
anyone ends up in the San Francisco Bay Area, please give me a call. I also
now have an unused ticket to New Jersey. Perhaps some weekend I'll just hop
on a plane and visit those people who are still in the area.

Let's keep in touch.

Hello Old Friends -

Yes we are getting older aren't we? On to brighter subjects.

Very interested to see where the paths of life have taken all of you.
Most of what I see ( all of it ) makes me very proud to have been
associated with such an intelligent and hardworking group. Special thanks
are in order to Neal McBurnett for organizing a site on the Web for this
sort of thing. I did manage to find this page again after Maggie had
given me the address the Brunch Morning of the reunion. We didn't make it
due to my "geezing". Yep - For you Doctors out there, I had a herniated
disk at L5,S1. A laminectomy was done and I was in recovery. Past
reunions fell on my Wedding Anniversary... November 29th. "Jean Shelby"
Beauchamp and I have been married 16 years now. WOW. Always loved that
girl! Everybody probably remembers me as an Artist.

I went to Parson's School of Design in New York and started developing a
nice freelance illustration business. One thing lead to another and in my
final semester at Parsons I was hired as Senior Art Director for the
Pharmaceutical Advertising Firm of Simms Associates in Bridgewater, NJ.
Simms Associates lead to another job with the Pharmaceutical Advertising
firm of MED Communications located in Woodbridge. That was followed by a
brief stay at DMB&B in New York where I was hired away to join TRL
Communications in Rutherford. The company moved to Parsippany and so did
I. My position was VP, Associate Creative Director until about a year and
a half ago. At that point I formed my own affiliate company which I am
President of. I named it "Spectral Fusion".

All the time that this creative process was changing, I became more and
more aware of the new technologies. Interactives, Websites... the works.
Anyone who works with "Painter", "Photoshop", and 3D Rendering Programs
knows that I found more than enough Creative outlets merged with
technology. :) The possibilities are unlimited. I managed to bring the
company over to a data dependent platform and I'm still trying to break
the Computerphobia that so many have. Anyone in this area of business
certainly knows what I mean. When does the press say anything about the
Internet without discussing Pedophiles or Hackers? What message did "The
Net" send or "Hackers"? That's right... nothing of relevance here - just
trash. I don't think so. Meanwhile we'll chug along and attempt to
convince the Pharmaceutical and other Corporate Giants of the viability
of a 24 hour "virtual" salesforce to augment daytime operations. My other
personal ventures that I am President of are "Ionosphere Publications,
Inc" and "Multimedical Communications, Inc."

Jean and I have two boys. Thomas Forbes Beauchamp is 13 years old and is
rather "Hormonal" in his developmental stage. Toys one day, experiments
the next... He is very gifted and has fortunately inherited his Mom's
study skills (good thing). He is at the top of his class. Matter of fact
he just tested highest in his school for an appearance on "Carmen
Sandiago". Maybe your children will see him :) Tom has become
accomplished on the trumpet and his school's "Jazz Band" lead by Mr.
Loreti, - YES - small world, (son of the Music teacher that many of us
had while growing up), will be the opener at the Waterloo Jazz Festival
in June. He will solo.

His 12 year old brother Jonathan Cauffiel Beauchamp is a lot like his
Dad. Sort of in his own little world, yet getting the job done. He loves
to draw and is interested in Art just like I was. Uh oh... He's the
family drummer and has a Heart of Gold.

Jean worked for Prudential after graduating from Fairleigh Dickenson up
until Thomas was born. Once Jon reached an age of being pretty
independent, Jean went back to School and is now a Registered Nurse at
the Medical Center at Princeton. She's very active with the Church and
with Scouts for the boys.

For those who knew our parents Jean's Mom, "Alice Shelby" passed away in
1982. My Mom, "Janet Beauchamp" passed away in November of 1994. Jean's
Dad remarried and lives in Chatham where he is currently building a
biplane. My Dad lives by himself, alternating between his two homes,
Wilmington, Delaware and Ocean City, New Jersey.

Siblings -
Ted Beauchamp, my older brother, his wife Joyce and their 3 cats live in
Roselle Park, New Jersey. "beacham@village.ios.com"
Ken Shelby, his wife Janet, and their son Isaac, moving soon to Somers,
New York "KEN S@datalogix.com"
Joe Shelby, his wife Sue and their 3 sons James, Bryan and Alec live in
Morrisville, Pennsylvania.
Laura Shelby, her husband Jeff and their 4 chidren Emily, Becky, Ben and
Abby live in Southwest Harbor, Maine. "royalpro@acadia.net"

So that's what going on with the Beauchamps and Shelbys. Oh yeah... I
have time to write this as my first back Surgery failed and I had a redo
a month ago. Looks like I'll be back in the office in July if the healing
goes well.

I'd love to hear from any of you and we have Internet Phone and CUSeeMe
on the Computer here so say when and how and we'll virtually get
together! Live Webcam on my homepage soon.

Visit the Web Page at http://gramercy.ios.com/~beachm
It's always changing.

Best of luck to you and unlike some alumni I PROMISE NOT TO TRY AND SELL
YOU ANYTHING. These contacts are for FUN!

Take care,
Bill Beauchamp

Welcome! How did you find us?

So I've been reflecting recently on passing the latest decade
mark, and it occurred to me that I know a bunch of other folks
who've "been there, seen that" recently. Any thoughts, updates,
etc since our last flood of mail (over a year ago...).

I'm mainly bummed because hardly anybody noticed, partly because I'm
still telecommuting from Oregon to Denver where most of my roots and
buddies are....

This is probably a bad time to start this conversation, since
I'm headed out on vacation next week, but ya gotta start sometime...

As always see the home page, archives etc. at

Wow - this thing still works!

But the addresses for Ted Senator and Walter Zengerle don't work
(perhaps more bounces to come....). Anyone have any updates?

Dave, you're right on! I seem to recall telling someone here
at work in Oregon that my birthday was coming up and he said
"we should have a party" and I automatically responded with
my "nah - no need to bother" stuff.

Contrast that with my wife Holly, who two years ago made it
very clear that stuff should happen. And I got a bunch of folks
together and it was great. Then somehow I expected her
to reciprocate, even though my constant message is "don't bother
with presents, christmas, etc. - just help keep up the great
relationship we have every day...."

So this weekend (only 5 weeks after-the-fact) there is a party and
then a private surprise in store....

As for summing life-so-far up in brief :-)

I guess I keep wishing I had found a good mentor who would push me to
get more done. I feel very happy with what I've contributed to Bell
Labs and the community, but I know I would have more fun if more of my
bright ideas had turned into finished projects. If I was
collaborating more of the time rather than satisfying my constant urge
to just hole up, read and learn and plan what "could be".

So I hope I'm not too old to still be someone's protogee....
I figure there's another good 40 years to come if I keep a
positive attitude.

I do wonder how quickly the hair over my temples will continue to
recede. But I often feel very lucky in having a wonderful wife, a
great job, lots of fun friends, having gotten good early advice to
start saving money, etc.

Come visit me live at Diversity University some time. I hang
out in the MOO as "NealMcB":

Thanks, Neal, I'm glad you put the page up, although I seem to be almost
two years late. I stumbled across it in kind of an odd way. I was searching
for info about a "Sheila Johnson" (a friend of an ex-girlfriend, don't ask
me why), but the name was too common. I thought, wait a minute, didn't I go
to HS with a "Sheila Johnson"? (Actually, no, that was Sheila Bonnell I was
thinking about.) Thinking of folks from Summit HS, then, I thought of a
relatively uncommon name from HS to plug in: Luberoff! (Hello, Dave!) And
up popped the Class of '75 reunion page.

Well, hello, everybody, long-lost HS buds and assorted hangers-on! I
remember you all, although faces are by and large those in the Junior HS
yearbooks for some inexplicable reason. I'm not sure why I've been listed
as being among those missing in action. I haven't been hiding (nor am I
dead or in prison, although that would make an interesting list to post
here).

I feel compelled to recount my doings over the last twenty-odd years. I
also feel a shameful twinge of self-indulgence at the prospect. My avowedly
self-indulgent home page (http://www.gate.net/~wyman/) will fill one in to
an extent, but even with its sprawl it's still an incomplete picture (you
*will* find pictures from the last twenty years, though!). Also, I really
should be doing other things, particularly since I'm sitting for the
Florida bar exam next Tuesday and Wednesday.

How I got to *that* point is an interesting tale. I left Syracuse in 1976
after my freshman year, primarily because they refused to recognize bonging
as a legitimate major. I moved out to California (San Jose) later that
year. Over the next couple of years I grabbed a few credits at a community
college and worked with the developmentally disabled at a state hospital,
among other things. I moved back to Manhattan in 1979. With the exception
of 1982, which I spent in Paris writing a (what else?) self-indulgent novel
that remains unpublished, I spent the next dozen or so years in Manhattan
(well, 3 of those were in Jersey City!) doing a bizarre assortment of
things: copywriter, actor in commercials, sales clerk, retailing executive,
freelance writer, and recording engineer, producer, and artist (signed with
RCA). All but music and retailing were relatively short-lived. The
music-biz stuff was what I had been doing for the last six years before I
left Manhattan for Florida in 1992. The move to Florida was precipitated by
my desire to go to law school, having decided that I couldn't see myself
making rap and dance music at age 50 (though I did very much like working
with the computers and technogadgets). However, I only had 33 college
credits, which was, um, a small problem. My mother, who had since moved to
Sarasota, Fla., offered to put me up while I finished undergrad, an offer I
quickly accepted because it was going to be very difficult to keep a
Manhattan apartment on my own and go back to school. In any event, I
finished up my undergrad (Lit major) in Florida and stayed in-state to go
to law school at FSU in order to take advantage of the cheap tuition
(though I still owe big $$ nevertheless). I did very well in law school,
where I was editor-in-chief of the law review (check out the on-line
version I created at http://www.law.fsu.edu/lawreview/).

So that's where I am now. I'm moving out of Tallahassee next week right
after the bar exam (Tally is Florida in name only, it's more like south
Georgia). I'll be clerking at an appellate court in Miami for a year and
living in, yup, South Beach, media haunt of the last week or so. I'm not
sure what I'll be doing after my clerkship is up--I've kept my options open
as far as areas of the law are concerned. Could be anything from civil
rights to cyberlaw. I do have to pay off my student loans, though! I would
like to settle down and get married, particularly now (thanks for
reminding, Neal!) that I've turned 40. I really feel like the last holdout!
Everybody seems to be married with kids. I've no prospects now, but I
suppose that's the next goal.

A couple of odds and ends--of my family members, those of you out there
probably only knew my brother Nick, who is married, has three kids, and
lives in Larchmont. He's done quite well as an actor--perhaps you saw him
as Jeremy Irons' sidekick in Die Hard with Avengeance, among other things.
I haven't kept in touch with anyone from Summit really, although I've
stayed good friends with Gil Chassie, Scott Schnipper, and Greg Rybka over
the years (none of whom were in our class, though).

Anyway, sorry for the rambling post here. I've read most of the posts in
the archive--it's really great to see what everyone's been up to, Tina,
Becky, Dave, Bill, Neal, etc. Love the "Peter Quizert" post! Only a HS
class from the mid-70s would get something like that. Anyway, I'm always
open to e-mail from any and all comers--I'm on-line daily. Here's my
address and phone, too, for the record: 401 Ocean Drive #220, Miami Beach,
FL 33139 (305) 604-8533. That's effective August 1. As I mentioned earlier,
I'm only tied to Miami for a year; if I don't stay there, I can always be
found in cyberspace. But since Neal, bless him, has put the site up and
maintained the listserv, I'm hopeful I'll always be able to tune in that
way. Cheers!

James

James, nice story! Thanks for not being bashful - it is fun to cut to
the chase with the reunion crowd.

My dad was a lawyer - a patent lawyer. But my favorite t-shirt is
"Innovate, don't Litigate" from the League for Programming Freedom.
Sounds like you might find a niche in the law that contributes to society
rather than helping the corporate world to sail on past our best
efforts to promote a sustainable world :-)

Your web page is great, especially all the different pictures.
And, as you say, self-indulgent. Hey, so is mine :-)
That's quite a set of experiences!

Funny, Neal, I just saw a bumper sticker that said "Mediate Don't
Litigate," which the mediator-lawyer community apparently passes around.
The mind boggles at the possibilities here--"Fornicate Don't Litigate,"
well, let's stop there. Interesting that your dad was a patent lawyer--I
had given some thought to that but lack the academic science background
normally required. I'm big on the copyright end of intellectual property,
though--it merges nicely with cyberlaw and is one of 4 or 5 areas I'm
interested in pursuing.

Say, this is a nonsequitur of sorts, but who was the physics teacher at SHS
whose first name was Walt? You know, friendly older guy (hell, he was
probably the age we are now) with graying hair and glasses? I haven't seen
a yearbook in ages so I can't recall. I do remember Mrs. Owens the biology
teacher for some (probably hormonal) reason.

Anyway, this is all very nice here and again I thank you for setting this up.

Greetings:

As this is my first foray into the cyber world of SHS I will be brief. This
is all a bit frightening to me. While I have been on-line through AOL for a
while I am a novice and duly impressed by James & Neals knowledge and
abilities.

I do not have a web page but can be reached on AOL as BROBB31.aol.com or
through the SHS teleport (however that works???)

I will echo James hats off to Neal for his efforts and thank him again for
his help during the reunion planning.

I'll write again soon and fill you in on my activities but it was great to
hear about you guys.

By the way, what's with all this talk about 40. As one of the youngsters in
the class I have some time left!

Oh, and another thing....Walt Lockwood was the physics teacher. I took
physics senior year and I am convinced that the only reason I passed was
because Mr. Lockwood was the senior class advisor. As president I would
always find "reasons" why I had to leave class to tend to senior class
business. I'm sure he felt sorry for me and didn't have the heart to fail me
since I was president under his guidance. Thank god because I was a miserable
physics student (and biology...and chemistry.....and math............)

We'll type again soon.

Larry, I look forward to hearing about your doings over the past couple of
decades. It's really a delight hearing from people I haven't heard from or
about in years. Cyberspace is a friendly, not a frightening place, though!
Less intrusive than making phone calls and less formal than writing
letters. I bet a lot more of our classmates have gotten on-line over the
last two years. Even my 76-year-old mother is on-line!

BTW, although I visit the Summit area every once and a while, I just
recently had a chance to visit Summit virtually at the not-too-bad Summit
Online web site at http://www.new-jersey.com/summit/. I note that Dr.
Geddis is still principal at SHS and our favorite bellowing social studies
teacher cum football coach from junior high--that's right, EMIL
GEORGE!!!--is now the vice-principal. Tom Quinn and Anthony Wharton used to
do very good impressions of him . . . .

I don't know why this just popped into my mind but I just had this
flashback of going into Windhorst Liquors (long gone) on Broad Street with
Larry trying to buy underage. Boy, things were different then. I hope
you're not with the N.J. Alco. Bev. Comm'n now, Larry, and I've wrecked
your chances for a promotion!

Hello all,
Just grazing around the net and found my name on this page and thought I'd say
Hi. My Mom and Dad moved to England my Junior year in college and so I lost
touch with Summit ... only been back once or twice in 20 years.....here's a
few (unapolagetically self-indulgent odds and ends) you might find these
amusing... ah remember biology with Mr. Woodside?...... well, I have been
teaching biology at Radford High School in southwest VA for the last 20
years..... I built (as a contractor and laborer) my own log home.... I got
married soon after college and now have a son in High School and a daughter in
6th grade....I am a 1991 Presidential awardee in science teaching... have
several books and lab books, pubs. etc.., traveled all over the US doing
science teaching presentations etc... coached cross country, indoor track
and outdoor track, our team won the state championships and may regional and
district titles.... High school seems a long way away!!! What a long
strange trip this has been.

I've relocated from Portland OR back to Boulder CO, and so I
won't renew my account at my Portland ISP: teleport.com.

Are people still interested in having a summit mailing list at another
place?

Is someone interested in hosting the mailing list? You can
use http://www.egroups.com/ to host it for free. Other options are
http://www.coollist.com/ and http://www.stargame.org/

Is anybody there? :-)

Remember, the summit virtual reunion site is still at

I'm still interested in having a mailing list, Neal (notwithstanding those
last few spams!). I imagine the closer we get to the 25th--hey, isn't that
next year?--there might well be more interest in posting on the list here.

In any event, I'm more than glad to go to egroups and create a new list.
Stay tuned . . . .

James
