The Science of the Millennium

There are already far too many sources out there taking the millennium at face value. This page is devoted to using all the hubbub to focus attention on some fascinating aspects of science. It builds on the theme established by Stephen Jay Gould in Questioning the Millennium: A rationalist's guide to a precisely arbitrary countdown.

Is the Greenwich Observatory "The Center of Time and Space"?

Large signs proclaim this as part of a large millennium-related media campaign at the renowned Royal Greenwich Observatory in England, where an international convention? in 1884 determined....

First we address "Is the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Longitude zero, as used today for the definition of Universal Time?"

Not for Latitude.

Center of time? Ha! Time doesn't even run at the right rate there: not sea level....

Deserves to be honored for critically important scientific work in the past.

But not even funding real science now.

When is the millennium?

Most debate focuses around the issue of 2000 vs 2001. But several other epochs can be selected:
Year: J2000.0, spring equinox,
Timescale: UTC, UT1, UT0, TAI, TT/ET, Local mean time, Local time
Lunar cycles. Solar cycles.

Natural base system: base 2

and natural multiples: ((2^2) ^ 2) ^ 2 ...

Natural unit of Time

Atoms, pulsars, life. Multiples of seconds. Lunar.
