Boulder Community Network and the Internet

12 July 1994

What is the Boulder Community Network (BCN)?

BCN is a free online library of community information. The mission is to empower citizens via increased awareness of and access to local information and to the National Information Infrastructure. BCN's creation and ongoing evolution processes can help create a greater sense of local community.

BCN does not currently plan to offer individual accounts for communications services due to lack of money and to avoid duplication of effort, although we will help targeted sub-communities to set up their own communications BBSs.

Who is BCN?

BCN is a cooperative effort involving Boulder educational, social, civic, and non-profit entities. Current participating organizations include the University of Colorado, Boulder Public Library, Longmont Public Library, the Boulder Valley School District, Boulder County and City governments, the Boulder County United Way, the Boulder County Civic Center (BCCC) and other local BBS and communications providers and local public broadcasting stations (KGNU, KBDI). We are also working with the Boulder County Business Report, the Knight-Ridder Information Design Lab, Cable Labs, Apple Media Labs, the Daily Camera and national labs.
