Other ways to get to BCN:
BCN will offer free dial-in modem lines for browsing information when we
get funding to do so. In the meantime, the only options are kiosks
like those at the Boulder Public Library, or an Internet account.
Many people in the county have access to the Internet. E.g. you
might have it via your Boulder Valley School District or
University of Colorado student account, or via a work affiliation.
But be careful - you need full "telnet" access, not just an electronic mail address.
You can also purchase a dial-in account from one of the many local
Internet providers for about $10-20 per month.
(do these work? or you can access the free, but busy, services of
Nyx (modem: 871-3324) or Denver Freenet (modem: 270-4865))
If you have access to the Internet, either:
run "Mosaic http://bcn.boulder.co.us/"
or "lynx http://bcn.boulder.co.us/"
or telnet to bcn.boulder.co.us, port 2001,
Frequently Asked Questions:
Why doesn't the left arrow seem to work?
The left arrow between the regular keypad and the numeric keypad
is re-defined as a backspace key. Use the left arrow in the
numeric keypad (?turn off numlock first?)
How can I take the information I've found home with me?
You can print it out for 10 cents a page (? print screen? )
maybe reference also?
If you have an Internet mail address (an address like "user@colorado.edu")
you can mail the current page to yourself via the "p" command.
It's not responding to me - what do I do?
Stuck while getting a new page of information:
type "z" or CTRL-G
Stuck in Kermit download:
hit CTRL-C, CTRL-C, CTRL-C
Why don't telnet connections work?
We have chosen not to provide telnet at this time due
to the confusing range of interfaces, the potential
for abuse and the higher priority of other uses of the
computers.
Why does the screen stay blank after I quit?
The best way to quit is via function key F4 (Alt-F10 for staff)
How to use the interface
The interface to the Boulder Community Network and the Internet (more
specifically, the World Wide Web) that is used from most Boulder
Public Library computers is Lynx, a program developed by the
University of Kansas. They very kindly provide it at no cost for
educational use.
The colored portions of text are hypertext links to further information.
Use the up and down arrows on the numeric keypad to highlight the link
you are interested in and hit "Return" to select it.
