Two meetings have been held: one at Marshall to hear the goals of the principal and of John Coady; the other, a meeting Jan Wierma, the School-to-Work coordinator, to determine how City Club can help with the Marshall Plan. An implementation plan has not yet been clearly articulated at Marshall; so the role of the Committee is still undefined. What We Did on Vacation: Neal, recently returned from six weeks in Scotland and England, reported on his adventures, which included ancestor research in Edinburgh and an interesting visit to Runnymede. Kurt's month in France included seeking out unusual places, like the source of the Seine (it's drinkable there!), a cemetery in Paris where Lafayette is buried along with 1500 people who were beheaded, an early salt works, and Normandy beaches. Of course he also visited vineyards and wineries, met wine makers and tasted the fruits of their labors. His favorite guidebook for off-the-beaten-track vacations: Traveler's Tales. Marie attended a Leadership Institute in Seattle focused on how to lead sustained change. She described the highlights and some key points: 1) the primary responsibility must always be self management 2) a mental model (map) in the form of a triangle with points representing a) the sponsor of the change b) the implementer of change and c) an agent who is the facilitator. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Duncan described upcoming meetings: Dec. 11: Bill Noonan, Ph.D., will demonstrate Activating the Fifth Discipline, a new CD-ROM multimedia course based on Peter Senge's best selling book, The Fifth Discipline. Noonan was a contributing supervisor and the content expert for the mental models section of Activating the Fifth Discipline. The CD course uses a number of multimedia based scenarios to introduce basic concepts of system thinking and mental model skills. The entire course is 8-10 hours long and is quite expensive, so this is an opportunity to view portions of it, presented on screen, using a portable computer and InFocus projection equipment. January 8: Dan Abbott, Director of Education and Training at Morse Bros. in Tangent, Oregon (one of the 100 best companies to work for in Oregon), will demonstrate some of the educational tools he and his staff create and use to empower their work force. Morse Bros. won an Arthur Andersen Award of Excellence for best practices this year. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND AND/OR BRING ADDITIONAL PEOPLE TO EITHER OF THESE MEETINGS, PLEASE LET DUNCAN KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT HE CAN MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR SPACE. You may contact him at or call 241-7809. [Note from Duncan: I have 2 guests so far, Marie Morgan has 7] SCIENCE BREAKFASTS: Kurt reported on the work of an ad hoc committee formed to plan the science breakfasts. A number of topics have been narrowed down to four, with the following tentative dates. Names in () indicate who is charged with lining up a speaker and defining the topic: February 26: Cloning: Dr. Don Wolfe, OR Primate Research Center (Kurt & Linda) March 26: Neuroscience (Nancy) April 23: Wine (Kurt & Linda) May 28: High Tech in Oregon (Marie) Marie described a point made by Eric Sten at a Friday program where he expressed frustration at the creation of false dichotomies, i.e., schools vs. business. She asked that we think consciously about how we frame our expectation of the presenter, or stimulate the dialog during the question period, to lead to a new way of thinking about the issue. Kurt was interested in giving the audience suggestions of some actions that they can take when they leave the breakfast by making sure that the presentations provide personal relevance. Discussion followed about marketing. Linda and Duncan both emphasized that well-targeted publicity, with adequate lead time, is key to the success of the breakfasts. Duncan described the ways that the Learning Organization series was publicized, including mailing lists, distribution through the schools, publicity through co-sponsors, the City Club bulletin, fliers and telephone follow-up. Pete has old Science Breakfast mailing lists that he will provide. Kurt suggested the OR MBA Program as a co-sponsor. Co-sponsors would help with publicity and would endorse the series. Linda, Kurt, Duncan and Nancy agreed to meet on Thursday, 11/20 at 5 p.m. at OMSI [postponed to Tuesday, 11/25] to brainstorm a publicity plan. WEB PAGE: Neal asked who is currently the web page contact at the City Club. Duncan indicated that Nancy Hedin is the contact for the committee. Nancy reports that Europa has been good to work with and has been very responsive. Neal reported that he has not been able to locate the page and it is apparently not up. Pete said that if it is not up, he and Duncan will need to find out why and what is going on. {Duncan hit the new Web page a week ago www.pdxcityclub.org] There was some discussion about the content of the web page. It would be a good place to publicize the Science Breakfasts. Duncan has proposed to other issue committee chairs the opportunity to contribute information for the web page, but did not get much response. He believes that they need more education about the opportunities available. Neal expressed interest in pursuing the development and maintenance of the web page. Meeting adjourned: 9:00 a.m. Submitted by: Nancy Stueber
